Since Alberto Braniff made the first flight in Mexico and Latin America in 1910, the area now known as Llanos de Balbuena has been used for the aeronautical activity. A Voisin biplane was used for the trip. In 1911, President Francisco I. Madero of Mexico became the first head of state to fly when he accompanied Moisant International pilot Geo M. Dyott on a flight in a Deperdussin.

Balbuena Military Airport, originally established in 1915, initially had five runways. In 1928, work began on what would become a tiny civilian airport. The first landing occurred in November 1928, and although regular service began in 1929, it was formally established in May 1931.

The Central Airport in Mexico City was officially designated as an international airport in July 1943. A decree was issued in the Official Gazette of the Federation recognizing the airport's ability to handle international passenger and aircraft arrivals and departures.

Mexicana Airlines' inaugural overseas flight departed from and landed in Los Angeles. Six years later, a platform, terminal building, control tower, administrative offices were built, along with Runway 05D-23I. In 1951, the runway began serving the public.

The passenger terminal, now known as Terminal 1, was officially opened by President Miguel Alemán in November 1952. In 1956, nighttime flights were possible thanks to the airport's lighted runways.
